Gareth Johnson is the founder and Managing-Director of adventure travel company Young Pioneer Tours. He is also CEO of Philippines based GNTravel as well as main owner of The DMZ Bar in Yangshuo, China.
Before leaving the UK he did a myriad of low paid low skill jobs before realizing life in the UK was not for him and moving to the Cayman Islands and finding a job as a bartender. After 3 years making cocktails in the sun he transferred to working on cruise ships spending two contracts bartending around the Med, Scandinavia and The Caribbean before again deciding on a career change.
In 2006 whilst back in the UK he took a TEFL training course in Manchester before embarking on a career teaching English in Xi’an, China. After working his way up to Director of Studies he had the idea of forming the adventure travel company Young Pioneer Tours whose aim it was to “to places your mother would rather you stayed away from” and thus a new chapter was born.
Since its inception in 2008 the company has gone from strength to strength and led Gareth into starting, or getting involved in a number of other companies and projects, all adhering to his sense of adventure and most importantly helping keep him in the lifestyle and travel opportunities he is accustomed to.
Since the start of his wanderlust he has been to 106 countries and territories, whilst spending time living in the Cayman Islands, Barbados, China, The Philippines and Bulgaria. His favourite country on the planet is the Philippines, with his most memorable travel experience being a tie between Antarctica and North Korea.
